Today Jesus mounts a devastating attack on the Pharisees and the lawyers (Gospel). Pharisees, because their misplaced concern for ritual purity actually exploited the people. Lawyers, because their lack of knowledge of “the Wisdom of God” (Lk 11:49) led the people astray.
The attitude of the scribes and Pharisees contrasted with the thousands who came out to see Jesus. The lawyers and teachers of the Law, who were concerned about the knowledge of the Law, had taken away the key of true knowledge and hindered those who were seeking Jesus’ truth (Focus). They had never bothered to listen to the wisdom of God. The scribes and Pharisees had failed in their duty as religious leaders because they blocked access to God instead of facilitating it.
The same goes for us. We often complain that the next generation has lost Christian values – they are concerned only with worldly things that satisfy their whims. If we have children who are going the wrong way, could it be because we ourselves never tried to enter and even prevented others from entering the door of knowledge (Lk 11:52)
Luke’s portrayal of Jesus in the Gospel helps us identify with Jesus and accept him as the Christ sent by God to save us – if we change inside.
Fruit: Let me critically examine my heart. If it is too world-friendly, I must reaffirm my Christian values.
