THE LORD CALLED ME BEFORE IWAS BORN
(Scripture Reflection Isaiah 49:1)"Listen to me, you islands; hear this, you distant nations: Before I was born the LORD called me; from my mother's womb he has spoken my name."
Before a main speaker or musician, others are told to perform, to set the mood for the main act.
God planned to save the human race through Jesus. His plans are always perfect. He wanted someone specially selected by him to alert and prepare the people for the arrival of Jesus, the Saviour of the world, so that his ‘salvation may reach to the end of the earth’ (Isa 49:6). And that messenger was John the Baptist.
We can see how long ago (Focus) God planned the details of this mission, even to the extent of deciding names: ‘He named me’ (Isa 49:1). And Zechariah fulfilled his own role in God’s plan by listening to the angel and cooperating: ‘He asked for a writing tablet and wrote, “His name is John”’ (Lk 1:63). Thus we realise that God was continually working through the prophets from the beginning.
He works through us too.
We may not be famous like John the Baptist or the Pope or St Teresa of Calcutta. Yet we all have a role to play in the grand plan of God, till the Second Coming of Jesus. John was clear in his mission: he baptised people and spoke out against sin. We too can announce Jesus by our behaviour.
Fruit: Like John the Baptist, each one of us is called to a specific mission. Can we discern what it is and act on it today?
