MUCH WILL BE REQUIRED
(Scripture Reflection Luke 12:48)
"From everyone who has been given much, much will be required, and from the one who has been entrusted with much, even more will be asked."
In the corporate world, we are regularly required to meet targets. If they are successfully reached we are rewarded through a promotion or with more pay. If not, we are given a warning or may be sacked.
Today, Jesus too has strong words for those responsible to run his kingdom on earth (Gospel). Irrespective of whether the Master is around or not we must work dutifully. Those who fail will be cast out (Lk 12:46).
Stephen Binz in his book Jesus, the Compassionate Saviour puts it succinctly: ‘The servant-leaders of Christ’s Church must serve with one eye looking for Jesus’ return and the other searching for ways of carrying out their responsibilities, knowing that they must give an account of their service’ (Focus).
The Church consists of the whole community. All have roles. It is easy to abdicate this duty to others, so nobody does anything. We need to think. Do we leave all responsibility in the hands of our heavily burdened Parish Priest or do we do our bit to make our community grow by reaching out to those in need? We can help not just monetarily but with the talents we have been granted e.g. give tuitions, visit those who live alone or are sick, provide support in availing of welfare schemes etc.
Fruit: It is in giving that we receive. Can I try it today by offering help to someone in need?
