Being part of a prayer group implies that we ought to be primarily men and women of prayer i.e. the vertical aspect Mt 22/37-39 at the same time, not forgetting the horizontal aspect of reaching out to our neighbor. The core ingredient of every prayer meeting is praise & worship, breaking the Word, and usually towards the end praying for the needs of those present.
Today there is a greater need for intercessors to stand in the gap between man and God. Ezekiel 22:30 "I looked for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found none”. What we observe happening in our city as we scan the newspapers or watch the media channels is, an increase of sexual crimes, terrorism, violence, and wickedness. We see an example in Abraham who interceded for Sodom and Gomorrah for their grave sins. God relented and spared Lot’s family else they too may have been destroyed with the others.
Our urgent responsibility of sharing the Good News is not restricted to our parishioners (Vision statement) but to ‘all men’. Once we have put our hand to the plough we cannot look back, we may bring condemnation upon ourselves. 2 Kings 7:9. “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field." Matt 9:37-38. Let us pray for vocations, for lay leaders who have a zeal and passion for souls.
With the elections soon approaching we recall St. Paul’s words in, 1 Tim 2:1-4 “I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone, forkings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth”. In all earnestness sisters and brothers, let us pray that we have a good government at the centre according to God’s will.
The ‘I’ is the central part of our vision /mission statement (D.I.E). Hence my earnest message to all core group and ministry members is that their primary calling is to be Intercessors, “Talking to God about His people before we talk to the people about God”. Quite a few leaders have been sharing how they have put this into practice and have seen much fruit borne in their prayer groups.
As we celebrate Easter I pray that the Risen Lord bless you and your family abundantly.
